Trip Overview : Pumori Expedition

Pumori Peak, with an altitude of 7161m, is a magnificent pyramid-shaped peak that spans Nepal and Tibet. Behind Kala Pathar, it dominates the skyline (19,000 ft). Because of its distinctive shape, this peak is very easy to spot. In Sherpa language, “Pumori” means “Unmarried Daughter.”

The Pumori expedition is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, as the summit provides a breathtaking view of the Everest region’s surrounding peaks. Pumori at an elevation of 7161m, is one of the Himalayas’ most popular climbing expeditions.

Anyone who has climbed to the summit of Everest will never forget its distinctive shape. The technically demanding Pumori Expedition is, in general, one of the best preparations for climbing Mt. Everest.

Most climbers’ dreams may include stepping foot on Mount Everest at least once in their lives. As a result, this expedition has served as a training peak for Everest teams. This expedition can truly fulfil your dream of reaching the summit of Everest in your next attempt.

This climb necessitates previous climbing experience as well as physical fitness. To reach the summit, you must stay in at least three camps after base camp. At an altitude of 5300 metres, the base camp is located just above Gorakshep.

Following base camp, we established the first camp at a height of 5650 metres, near Mount Pumori’s phase. After the 6,000-meter phase, the second camp is established on the ridge. This peak’s most technical section is between camps 1 and 2.

Camp 3 is located at a height of 6480 metres, just around the corner after the ridge. The summit of Pumori can be reached by ascending from camp 3. Every year, the majority of climbers use this route to reach Mt. Pumori.

Pumori offers sections of wild exposure, views of Lhotse and Mt. Everest, and technical difficulty worthy of any Himalayan alpinist, but it requires excellent physical fitness. Pumori is a serious Himalayan expedition peak that should only be attempted by experienced climbers in the Himalaya.

Day 01 - Arrival at Kathmandu (1400m/4590ft). Overnight at hotel

Welcome to Kathmandu, Nepal’s vibrant capital and the gateway to the Himalayas. Upon arrival, you’ll be transferred to your hotel, where you’ll meet the expedition team. In the evening, our trek leader will conduct a detailed briefing session, covering the climbing route, acclimatization plan, and safety protocols. This is also the time to check your gear and purchase or rent any missing equipment. If time allows, explore Kathmandu’s cultural gems, including Thamel, Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple), Boudhanath Stupa, and Kathmandu Durbar Square. Stroll through bustling streets, soak in the city's rich heritage, and enjoy local cuisine. After finalizing preparations, rest up for the adventure ahead - the Pumori Expedition awaits!

Day 02 - Kathmandu – Expedition preparation and Briefing

Your Pumori Expedition begins in Kathmandu, the vibrant capital of Nepal and the gateway to the Himalayas. Upon arrival, you’ll be transferred to your hotel, where you’ll meet your expedition team and trek leader. A detailed briefing session will cover the climb’s route, acclimatization plan, safety protocols, and essential gear requirements. This is the perfect time to double-check your equipment and purchase or rent any missing items. Day 03 - Fly from Kathmandu to Lukla (2860m/9383ft). Trek to Phakding (2610m/8560ft)

The Pumori Expedition begins with an early morning flight from Kathmandu to Lukla (2,853m / 9,360ft), one of the most thrilling air routes in the world. Departing around 5 AM, the team heads to Kathmandu Airport for this short yet breathtaking journey over the Himalayas. As you soar above the Kathmandu Valley, you’ll witness stunning aerial views of snow-covered peaks, rolling green hills, and deep river valleys. The highlight of this flight is your first glimpse of Mount Everest, an unforgettable moment that sets the tone for the adventure ahead. Upon landing in Lukla, the gateway to the Khumbu region, the trek officially begins. From here, the trail leads towards Phakding (2,600m / 8,500ft) or Monjo (2,850m / 9,350ft), two charming Sherpa villages along the Dudh Koshi River. Day 05 - Namche Bazaar – Rest Acclimatization day

This bustling Sherpa town, nestled in a natural amphitheater, is the commercial and cultural hub of the Khumbu region. The day is designed to help your body adjust to the increasing altitude, reducing the risk of altitude sickness. For active acclimatization, a short hike to Everest View Hotel (3,880m) is highly recommended. This vantage point offers stunning panoramic views of Mount Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, and Ama Dablam, making it one of the best spots for photography. Alternatively, explore the Sherpa Culture Museum and Sagarmatha National Park Visitor Center, where you can learn about the region’s history, mountaineering legends, and unique Himalayan wildlife. Day 06 - Trek from Namche Bazaar to Tengboche (3870m/12,700ft)

Day 29 - Kathmandu - Rest and Exploration day

For those interested in a deeper cultural experience, an optional guided city tour is available, covering some of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the valley. This tour may include Kathmandu Durbar Square, known for its ancient palaces and temples, and Bhaktapur, a well-preserved medieval city showcasing traditional Newari architecture and craftsmanship. Day 30 - Depart from Kathmandu

After completing the Pumori Expedition, today is a free day to explore Kathmandu at your own pace. For those interested in a deeper cultural experience, an optional city tour is available, featuring iconic UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as Kathmandu Durbar Square, known for its ancient palaces and temples, and the medieval city of Bhaktapur, famous for its rich Newari heritage and exquisite craftsmanship. This is also a great opportunity to unwind at a café, enjoy traditional Nepali cuisine, or visit spiritual landmarks like Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple) or Boudhanath Stupa. We recommend scheduling your return flight home on Day 31, as Lukla to Kathmandu flights can sometimes be delayed due to unpredictable mountain weather. Training

Our training goal is to get you physically and mentally prepared to face the climb with more confidence. The climbing goal will be to perform consistently throughout the adventure. Fitness for mountaineering requires a high overall level of physical conditioning. Both cardiovascular and motor fitness are needed to climb at varying levels of intensity and to navigate challenging terrain, often while carrying a loaded pack and at high altitudes.

Training goals are critically important and allow you to perform better at higher altitudes and enjoy the entire adventure. We suggest that you examine the physical requirements of the climb you are approaching and work on your fitness in different levels. Establish a timeline for your training program and focus on specific conditioning for better results. Along with your workouts try and add hikes and climbs in the outdoors whenever possible to get more comfortable with different terrains. Sound fitness gained through a well-guided program is the only best way to ensure a safe and successful adventure.

Mountaineering Fitness and Training
It may also be helpful to break down your training timeline into a number of key phases. These are:

Phase 1 : Base physical fitness
The first phase of getting prepared for your climb is to focus on your base fitness. You should incorporate a fitness routine that focuses on both cardiovascular fitness and motor fitness training. For those who are not used to intense workouts this phase will help you to kickstart your training. Remember that consistency is the first most important factor in achieving any goal. Combine your basic fitness regimes along with running and stair climbing. You are now ready for outdoor adventures.

Phase 2 : Training specific for the climb
Once you have established your base physical fitness, you will need to train specifically for the climb. Depending on the difficulty and intensity of the climb, add advanced workout sessions combined with uphill training. Try and do the same fitness routines with some added loads. Strength training combined with cardiovascular and motor fitness will help with the overall conditioning. This will take your workouts to the next level and help gear up for the mountaineering challenge ahead.

Phase 3 : Outdoor Training
Nothing can replace training in the real outdoors. In the final phase of your training, you should be attempting climbs which are similar to the ones you are approaching. It is great to test your endurance outdoors. This gives you a great edge in preparing for conditions similar to the ones you will encounter during your expedition. It isn’t always possible to find similar terrains close to where you live, but it is best to find a hike as close to the climb as possible. This is the best way to test your climbing gears as well.
Training goals and timeline

Working out for at least 5 days in a week is the best way to get your body physically prepared for the climb ahead. Regular and consistent training always gives the best result and keeps you highly motivated. Make sure that you workout regularly and also give enough time for rest and recovery. Keep it balanced and have a properly planned fitness routine and never overdo exercises to the point of injury. While 2 to 3 months is a good amount of time to train, starting your training earlier allows more time to adjust and prepare.

The experience of climbing Ama Dablam in Nepal with Protrek Adventure was fantastic! All of our Sherpa guides were wonderful, and they went above and beyond to help us reach our goals. (All of the members reached the summit!). It was our expedition leader’s 12th summit on Ama Dablam, and I had absolute confidence in his abilities.

Protrek Adventure’s hospitality is what sets them apart from other tour operators. The people working on the ground in Kathmandu were outstanding in their professionalism and friendliness. Everything was done to ensure that our stay was enjoyable and that the amenities met high standards. Whenever we had a question, they were there to answer it promptly and patiently.

The booking process went smoothly. Prior to the trip, each of us had a one-on-one phone conversation in which we learned about the training, gear, and other aspects of the trip. It was wonderful to have the opportunity to ask personal questions regarding the trip.

During the course of the hike, we were provided with the most helpful and professional support staff that anyone could ask for. The porters and guides took excellent care of us and were extremely knowledgeable about the terrain. The best food one could expect at such high altitudes made a big difference on this trip.
