Mount K2 Expedition

K2 Expedition is far more difficult and dangerous than climbing Everest via the standard North or Southside routes, so we plan to keep our team small and composed of qualified climbers, aided by some of the world’s best climbing Sherpas and mountain guides. We must be prepared to take advantage of very brief periods of good weather on K2, unlike on Everest, because the weather and route conditions are notoriously fickle. On the route following K2’s Abruzzi ridge, rockfall and snow avalanches are common, making it dangerous to climb or camp, and the monolithic ice cliff that overhangs the “bottleneck” and “traverse” portions of the route on summit day sheds ice frequently, so taking advantage of good route conditions and moving quickly are essential. Commercial operators now work together to set the fixed ropes on 8000-meter peaks like Everest, Cho Oyu, and Manaslu, thus sharing the workload; however, because K2 is undeveloped, we will likely be working alone or with only one other team to set the fixed lines. Furthermore, we will not be able to rely on assistance from other teams, so we must be self-sufficient throughout.
