Trip Overview : Gasherbrum 2 Expedition

In Pakistan’s Karakoram mountain range, Gasherbrum II is the 13th highest mountain in the world, located near K2 and Broad Peak. The Gasherbrum II Expedition is regarded as the easiest and safest of Karakoram’s 8,000-meter peaks.

Mountaineers can attempt Gasherbrum i-ii by paying an additional royalty fee. It is part of the Gasherbrum massif and shares a common base camp. We run a private and group climbing expedition to Gasherbrum that lasts 45 days.

We provide logistics to and from base camp. Depending on your available time, weather conditions, and climbing experience, the duration may be longer or shorter. You can either follow our standard Gasherbrum II expedition itinerary or have our travel advisor create one for you based on your specific needs.

From Islamabad, we embarked on our Gasherbrum II Expedition. Our representative will greet you at the Islamabad International Airport and transfer you to your hotel. We’ll meet in the evening over dinner to go over your Gasherbrum II Expedition in detail.

The following day, you will fly to Skardu, Baltistan, with spectacular mountain views. You’ll get your first glimpse of the great Nanga Parbat, K2, and other stunning Himalayan and Karakoram Mountain Peaks along the way.

The rest of the day in Skardu is for preparation after you check into your hotel. Skardu is the capital of Baltistan and the entry point to the mighty K2, Deosai Plato, Masherbrum, Gasherbrums, and a slew of other famous Karakoram peaks.

Trekkers and climbers usually make their final purchases for their upcoming mountaineering expeditions in Skardu. The next day, you’ll drive to Askoli along the Indus, Shigar, and Braldu Rivers. Askoli is the last village before entering the Karakorum’s wilderness.

After spending your first night in camp under the stars, your Expedition’s walking session will begin. You’ll walk towards Braldu, gorge, and the Baltoro glacier’s snout, which you’ll then follow to Concordia. Concordia is regarded as Karakoram’s heart, with breathtaking views of K2, Broad Peak, and other Karakoram giants.

Gasherbrum I and II base camps are a 5- to 6-hour walk from Concordia, where the Godwin Austen and Baltoro glaciers meet. The Gasherbrum mountain’s base camp is located directly beneath the Conway Saddle, which was the first route to Karakoram’s major peaks.

From here on out, your Gasherbrum II Expedition climbing session will begin. During your climb, we will camp at Gasherbrum Base Camp, and our mountain guide, chef, and other staff will be with you the entire time. Following the same Itinerary back to Islamabad after the climbing period.

A return trip over the 6,000-meter Gondogoro La and the beautiful green Hushe Valley, from which you will return to Skardu, is an option. Spend one night in Skardu before flying back to Islamabad (subject to weather). We will transfer you to Islamabad Airport for your flight back home after you have spent one night in Islamabad.

Day 01 - Arrive at Islamabad (500m/1,640ft). Overnight at hotel

Upon arrival in Islamabad, the vibrant capital of Pakistan, you’ll be welcomed by the hustle and bustle of this dynamic city, nestled against the scenic backdrop of the Margalla Hills. Situated at an altitude of 500 meters (1,640 feet), Islamabad serves as the gateway to the Karakoram range and the starting point of your Gasherbrum II expedition. After completing any necessary airport formalities, you’ll transfer to your hotel for an overnight stay, where you can relax and recover from your journey. This first day is all about settling in, making final preparations, and adjusting before the adventure into the rugged wilderness truly begins.

Day 02 - Fly From Islamabad to Skardu (2230m/7,315ft). Overnight at hotel

After an early breakfast, you’ll take a scenic flight from Islamabad to Skardu, a breathtaking journey that offers stunning aerial views of the Karakoram Range. Flying over rugged landscapes, deep valleys, and snow-capped peaks, this one-hour flight is an unforgettable experience. Skardu, located at 2,230 meters (7,315 feet), serves as the gateway to some of the world's highest mountains, including the legendary Gasherbrum II. Upon arrival, you'll check in at your hotel and have the rest of the day to relax or explore this picturesque mountain town. Skardu’s serene atmosphere, with its beautiful lakes, ancient forts, and welcoming local culture, provides the perfect setting for acclimatization before your expedition into the remote wilderness of the Karakoram.

Day 03 - Skardu - Official procedures and Expedition Arrangements

our time in Skardu is dedicated to finalizing official procedures and making essential expedition arrangements before heading into the remote Karakoram wilderness. As a crucial staging point for high-altitude expeditions, Skardu is where climbing permits are verified, equipment is checked, and last-minute supplies are secured. You'll visit local authorities to complete the necessary paperwork, ensuring compliance with Pakistan’s mountaineering regulations. Meanwhile, your expedition team will handle logistical preparations, organizing porters, pack animals, and transport for the rugged journey ahead. This day also offers an opportunity to explore Skardu’s stunning surroundings, from the turquoise waters of Satpara Lake to the historic Kharpocho Fort. With all preparations in place, the excitement builds as you get ready to embark on the trek toward Gasherbrum II’s towering glaciers.

Day 04 - Skardu - Rest and Acclimatization day

A rest and acclimatization day in Skardu is essential before venturing deeper into the Karakoram. At an altitude of 2,230 meters (7,315 feet), this mountain town provides the perfect environment for your body to adjust gradually to the increasing elevation. This day allows you to recover from travel fatigue while also exploring Skardu’s breathtaking landscapes. You can visit the serene Satpara Lake, wander through the local bazaars, or hike up to the ancient Kharpocho Fort for panoramic views of the Indus River Valley. It’s also a great time for last-minute gear checks and team briefings, ensuring everything is in order for the expedition ahead. Day 05 - Drive from Skardu to Askole (3050m/10,005ft)

The journey from Skardu to Askole marks the true beginning of your Gasherbrum II expedition, taking you deep into the heart of the Karakoram. This rugged drive is an adventure in itself, covering narrow, winding mountain roads that pass through breathtaking valleys, hanging glaciers, and dramatic rock formations. As you ascend to 3,050 meters (10,005 feet), the landscape transforms into a remote wilderness, with fewer signs of civilization. Askole, the last inhabited village before the trek begins, serves as the final staging point where porters and supplies are organized for the challenging expedition ahead. The night is spent in a camp or basic lodge, surrounded by towering peaks, as you prepare for the demanding trek that will lead you to one of the world’s most formidable mountains.

Day 06 - Trek from Askole to Jhola (3200m/10,500ft)

The trek from Askole to Jhola is the first step into the wild landscapes of the Karakoram, marking the true start of your journey toward Gasherbrum II. Leaving behind the last village of Askole, the trail follows the roaring Braldu River, winding through rugged terrain, glacial streams, and rocky moraines. The trek gradually ascends to 3,200 meters (10,500 feet), offering stunning views of towering peaks and vast, untouched valleys. As you cross suspension bridges and navigate through narrow gorges, the remoteness of the region becomes more apparent. After several hours of trekking, you arrive at Jhola, a scenic campsite set near the river, where you’ll rest for the night under a sky filled with countless stars. Day 07 - Trek from Jhola to Paiju (3450m/11,320ft)

The trek from Jhola to Paiju takes you deeper into the Karakoram, following the Braldu River through a dramatic landscape of towering cliffs and rocky trails. As you ascend to 3,450 meters (11,320 feet), the route offers breathtaking views of the Trango Towers and Cathedral Peak, some of the most iconic rock formations in the world. The terrain is rugged, with sections of loose scree and river crossings that test your endurance. Along the way, occasional patches of greenery provide a stark contrast to the surrounding wilderness. Paiju, a beautiful campsite at the base of the Baltoro Glacier, is a welcome sight after a long day’s trek. Day 08 - Paiju - Rest and Acclimatization day

A rest and acclimatization day at Paiju is crucial before continuing toward the high-altitude glaciers of the Karakoram. Sitting at 3,450 meters (11,320 feet), Paiju is the last green campsite before the barren, ice-covered landscapes ahead. This day allows your body to adjust to the increasing elevation, reducing the risk of altitude sickness as you move higher. While resting, you can explore the surroundings, enjoy breathtaking views of the Trango Towers, and witness the first glimpse of the Baltoro Glacier. Porters and support staff use this time to prepare loads for the demanding trek ahead. The day also offers a chance to recover from the previous strenuous hikes, ensuring you are well-rested and ready for the challenging terrain that awaits on the journey toward Gasherbrum II.

Day 09 - Trek from Paiju to Urdukas (4150m/13,615ft)

The trek from Paiju to Urdukas is a demanding yet awe-inspiring journey, leading you deeper into the heart of the Karakoram. As you leave the last traces of greenery behind, the trail ascends onto the vast and rugged Baltoro Glacier, a world of ice, rock, and towering peaks. At 4,150 meters (13,615 feet), Urdukas offers one of the most breathtaking campsites on the route, with panoramic views of the Trango Towers, Uli Biaho, and Paiju Peak dominating the skyline. The challenging terrain includes steep ascents and uneven glacier paths, testing both endurance and determination. Day 10 - Trek from Urdukas to Goro ll (4300m/14,105ft)

The trek from Urdukas to Goro II takes you deeper into the icy wilderness of the Karakoram, with the towering peaks of the Baltoro Glacier surrounding you at every step. The trail, now entirely on the glacier, becomes more challenging as you navigate uneven ice, moraine ridges, and crevasses. Gaining altitude steadily, you reach 4,300 meters (14,105 feet), where the air becomes thinner, and the landscape more surreal. The route offers breathtaking views of Masherbrum, Muztagh Tower, and the distant silhouette of Gasherbrum IV, reminding you of the legendary peaks that define this region. Day 12 - Trek from Shagharing to Gasherbrum II Base Camp (5000m/16,405ft)

The final leg of the approach, from Shagharing to Gasherbrum II Base Camp, is a challenging yet exhilarating journey through one of the most remote and extreme landscapes on Earth. As you climb to 5,000 meters (16,405 feet), the vast expanse of the Karakoram Glacier stretches before you, with towering ice walls, deep crevasses, and the breathtaking sight of Gasherbrum II rising in the distance. The thin air and harsh terrain make every step demanding, but the anticipation of reaching base camp keeps the team moving forward. Day 13 - Day 39 - Gasherbrum ll Peak (8035m/26,360ft) Climbing and Summit Period

The climbing and summit period of Gasherbrum II, spanning from Day 13 to Day 39, is the most critical phase of the expedition, requiring strategic acclimatization, rotations, and patience. At 8,035 meters (26,360 feet), Gasherbrum II is one of the world's highest peaks, demanding endurance, technical skill, and careful planning. After establishing base camp at 5,000 meters (16,405 feet), the team will begin a series of acclimatization rotations, gradually moving higher to adapt to the extreme altitude. The first step is setting up Camp 1 at approximately 5,900 meters (19,356 feet), reached through a challenging climb over crevassed terrain and steep ice slopes. After spending a night or two here, the team will descend back to base camp for recovery before progressing higher. The next rotation involves climbing to Camp 2 at around 6,400 meters (21,000 feet), where the air becomes significantly thinner, and the exposure to extreme weather intensifies. Further acclimatization includes establishing Camp 3 at roughly 7,000 meters (22,965 feet), a critical staging point for the summit push. Descending from 5,000 meters (16,405 feet) to 4,300 meters (14,105 feet), the route retraces the rugged glacier paths, weaving through crevasses, towering ice seracs, and shifting moraine fields. Though the descent is physically easier than the ascent, it requires careful navigation over unstable ice and exposed sections. The changing landscape, once a place of intense climbing efforts, now feels surreal as the towering peaks of Gasherbrum and Broad Peak fade into the distance. Day 41 - Trek from Goro ll to Paiju (3450m/11,320ft)

Leaving the icy expanse behind, the route gradually descends from 4,300 meters (14,105 feet) to 3,450 meters (11,320 feet), following the vast Baltoro Glacier past some of the most iconic peaks of the Karakoram. The towering faces of Masherbrum, Trango Towers, and Uli Biaho continue to dominate the skyline, offering breathtaking views throughout the journey. As you move lower, the air feels thicker, and the return of rocky trails provides a welcome break from the glacier’s uneven, icy surface. This one-hour flight, if weather conditions permit, provides breathtaking aerial views of snow-capped summits, deep valleys, and winding glaciers, serving as a final reminder of the rugged terrain you conquered during the Gasherbrum II expedition. Descending from 2,230 meters (7,315 feet) to 500 meters (1,640 feet), the sudden change in altitude and climate is noticeable as you leave the mountains behind and return to the bustling city life of Islamabad. Upon arrival, you’ll transfer to your hotel, where the comforts of civilization, a warm bed, fresh food, and modern amenities - offer a much-needed contrast to weeks spent in the harsh wilderness. Day 45 - Depart from Islamabad

With the Gasherbrum II expedition successfully completed, the journey comes to an end as you depart from Islamabad, carrying unforgettable memories of the Karakoram’s towering peaks and remote wilderness. After weeks of physical and mental endurance at extreme altitudes, the return to modern comforts and civilization offers a sense of accomplishment and reflection. Depending on your flight schedule, you may have time to explore Islamabad, visiting its cultural landmarks, bustling markets, or enjoying a final meal in Pakistan before heading to the airport. As you board your flight, the experience of summiting Gasherbrum II remains etched in your mind—a testament to perseverance, adventure, and the raw beauty of one of the world’s most formidable mountain ranges.

Training

Our training goal is to get you physically and mentally prepared to face the climb with more confidence. The climbing goal will be to perform consistently throughout the adventure. Fitness for mountaineering requires a high overall level of physical conditioning. Both cardiovascular and motor fitness are needed to climb at varying levels of intensity and to navigate challenging terrain, often while carrying a loaded pack and at high altitudes.

Training goals are critically important and allow you to perform better at higher altitudes and enjoy the entire adventure. We suggest that you examine the physical requirements of the climb you are approaching and work on your fitness in different levels. Establish a timeline for your training program and focus on specific conditioning for better results. Along with your workouts try and add hikes and climbs in the outdoors whenever possible to get more comfortable with different terrains. Sound fitness gained through a well-guided program is the only best way to ensure a safe and successful adventure.

Mountaineering Fitness and Training
It may also be helpful to break down your training timeline into a number of key phases. These are:

Phase 1 : Base physical fitness
The first phase of getting prepared for your climb is to focus on your base fitness. You should incorporate a fitness routine that focuses on both cardiovascular fitness and motor fitness training. For those who are not used to intense workouts this phase will help you to kickstart your training. Remember that consistency is the first most important factor in achieving any goal. Combine your basic fitness regimes along with running and stair climbing. You are now ready for outdoor adventures.

Phase 2 : Training specific for the climb
Once you have established your base physical fitness, you will need to train specifically for the climb. Depending on the difficulty and intensity of the climb, add advanced workout sessions combined with uphill training. Try and do the same fitness routines with some added loads. Strength training combined with cardiovascular and motor fitness will help with the overall conditioning. This will take your workouts to the next level and help gear up for the mountaineering challenge ahead.

Phase 3 : Outdoor Training
Nothing can replace training in the real outdoors. In the final phase of your training, you should be attempting climbs which are similar to the ones you are approaching. It is great to test your endurance outdoors. This gives you a great edge in preparing for conditions similar to the ones you will encounter during your expedition. It isn’t always possible to find similar terrains close to where you live, but it is best to find a hike as close to the climb as possible. This is the best way to test your climbing gears as well.
Training goals and timeline

Working out for at least 5 days in a week is the best way to get your body physically prepared for the climb ahead. Regular and consistent training always gives the best result and keeps you highly motivated. Make sure that you workout regularly and also give enough time for rest and recovery. Keep it balanced and have a properly planned fitness routine and never overdo exercises to the point of injury. While 2 to 3 months is a good amount of time to train, starting your training earlier allows more time to adjust and prepare.
