Gasherbrum 1 Expedition

Gasherbrum 1 Expedition does not mean “shining wall,” contrary to popular belief. The name is derived from the Balti words rgasha, which means lovely, and brum, which means mountain in Balti. The Gasherbrum Peaks are six in number. Gasherbrum I, also known as K5 and Hidden Peak, was given this name in 1892 by William Martin Conway in recognition of its extreme remoteness. It is the highest of the three peaks. It is also the world’s 11th highest peak and the Karakoram Range second highest. It is one of four 8,000m peaks clustered together on the upper reaches of the Baltoro glacier, the main access route to the mountains that cuts through the Karakoram Range. Karakoram is the world’s second tallest mountain range. It is located approximately 1,000 miles west of Nepal’s Himalayan mountain range. Tajikistan, China, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and India all border the range. With 60 peaks over 6900 metres, it is a condensed cluster of high peaks.
