OVERVIEW

Ama Dablam Expedition

  • Region: Khumbu Region, Nepal

  • Duration: 26 Days

  • Grade: Extreme
  • Max Altitude: 6812m/22,350ft
  • Best Season: Apr-May & Oct-Nov

Ama Dablam is one of the most stunning mountains located in the Himalayan range of Eastern Nepal. The main peak is 6,812 meters (22,350 ft), the lower western peak is 6,170 meters (20,243 ft). Ama Dablam means "Mother's necklace"; the long ridges on each side like the arms of a mother (ama) protecting her child, and the hanging glacier thought of as the Dablam, the traditional double-pendant containing pictures of the gods, worn by Sherpa women. For its soaring ridges and steep faces, Ama Dablam is sometimes referred to as the Matterhorn of the Himalayas.

We follow the original line of ascent via the southwest ridge, which is technically challenging under normal conditions with enough rock, snow, and ice to make it a difficult climb. The best time for this expedition is in the late autumn season when the weather is cold but also fairly predictable. Early spring is also possible. Our expert Sherpa climbing team provides extraordinary technical support for the climbers.

Challenging climbing begins to the southwest ridge from base camp - over boulder fields, slabs, cairns, and gullies to reach Camp 1 at 5700 meters. From Camp I, we follow the east side of the ridge and continue our climb on narrow crests and traverses until we are able to climb onto the west side of the ridge. The short section of the hardest pitch leads to Camp II that is in a very narrow space for camping. We continue climbing the ridge to the challenging traverse eastward. This route leads to the gully between the Grey Tower and other rocky structures to reach our Ama Dablam expedition Camp III. We start our climb and summit push from Camp IIl following the southwest ridge to the summit crossing many obvious and deep crevasses. The summit rewards you with breath-taking and panoramic mountain views.
