Trekking permit fees in Nepal depend on the region, duration of stay, and season. These permits are mainly required for restricted and controlled areas where visitor access is regulated to protect local culture, environment, and community resources. The fee structure is usually calculated per person, either per week or per day after a fixed number of days, and some regions have different peak and off-season rates.
Highly restricted regions such as Upper Mustang and Upper Dolpa have the highest permit costs because of their remoteness and cultural sensitivity. Other areas like Manaslu, Tsum Valley, Humla, Taplejung, Lower Dolpa, Manang, Mugu, Darchula, and parts of Solukhumbu and Rasuwa follow a weekly or daily extension model. In many of these zones, trekking is permitted only through a registered trekking agency with a licensed guide.
Permit requirements are often based on specific rural municipalities or wards along the trekking route, not the entire district. The collected fees contribute to conservation efforts, local administration, and sustainable tourism management. Travelers should always verify the exact permit category for their chosen route to avoid delays or penalties.
