Mountaineering royalty, also known as expedition permit fees, is a mandatory government charge imposed by the Government of Nepal for climbing mountains within the country. These fees are required for all mountaineering expeditions and are regulated by the Ministry of Tourism, Civil Aviation Authority, and Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA), depending on the altitude and classification of the peak.
The royalty system exists to manage climbing activities, regulate traffic on popular peaks, ensure safety oversight, and support conservation and infrastructure in remote mountain regions. Every climber attempting a peak in Nepal must obtain the appropriate permit, and the applicable royalty must be paid before the expedition begins.
How Mountaineering Royalty Is Structured
Mountaineering royalty fees in Nepal are primarily determined by three key factors:
Altitude of the peak
Season of the climb
Route classification (where applicable)
Peaks are grouped into altitude ranges, such as above 8000 meters, 7501–7999 meters, 7000–7500 meters, 6501–6999 meters, and peaks below 6500 meters. Each category carries a different fee structure, reflecting the logistical complexity, environmental sensitivity, and rescue preparedness required at higher altitudes.
The tables below clearly outline the government-set royalty fees for each peak based on these altitude classifications.
Seasonal Variation in Royalty Fees
Royalty fees vary by season, with spring generally being the most expensive season. This is because spring offers the most stable weather conditions and is the primary climbing season for major Himalayan peaks, especially those above 8000 meters.
Autumn fees are typically lower than spring but still significant, as this season also attracts climbers due to clear skies and moderate conditions. Winter and summer fees are the lowest, reflecting increased difficulty, harsher weather, and reduced climbing traffic.
These seasonal differences are clearly shown in the tables, allowing climbers to understand how timing impacts overall expedition costs.
Special Considerations for 8000-Meter Peaks
For peaks above 8000 meters, such as Mount Everest, Kanchenjunga, Lhotse, and Makalu, royalty fees are substantially higher due to the extreme altitude, complex logistics, and higher safety requirements. In the case of Mount Everest, fees also vary depending on whether the Normal Route or an alternative route is used.
These fees are charged per climber, not per expedition, and are strictly regulated. They form a significant portion of the total expedition cost and must be accounted for early in the planning process.
Mid-Altitude and 7000-Meter Peaks
Peaks between 7000 and 7999 meters include many technically demanding and less crowded mountains. While royalty fees are lower than those for 8000-meter peaks, they still reflect the serious nature of high-altitude climbing.
These peaks often appeal to experienced climbers seeking challenging objectives without the extreme congestion seen on higher peaks. The tables list all applicable peaks along with their seasonal royalty rates to help climbers plan accurately.
6000-Meter Peaks and NMA Peaks
Peaks below 6500 meters, commonly referred to as NMA peaks, are regulated by the Nepal Mountaineering Association. These peaks are popular for climbers progressing from trekking to mountaineering and are often included in guided expeditions.
Royalty fees for NMA peaks are significantly lower and are standardized across seasons, making them more accessible while still requiring formal permits and compliance with regulations.
Important Notes for Climbers
Royalty fees are non-refundable once permits are issued.
Fees must be paid in advance as part of the expedition permit process.
Royalty costs are separate from logistics, guide services, insurance, and rescue costs.
Any changes in climbing season, route, or peak may affect the applicable royalty.
At Protrek Adventure, we handle the complete permit and royalty process on behalf of our clients. This includes permit applications, fee payments, coordination with authorities, and compliance with all mountaineering regulations. Our team ensures that all paperwork is completed correctly so climbers can focus on preparation and the climb itself.
The tables below provide a detailed breakdown of current mountaineering royalty fees by peak, altitude range, and season, helping climbers understand how these government charges are structured across Nepal’s Himalayan mountains.
